Slovenia's need for Christ |
Slovenia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Prior to becoming sovereign, the socialist nation was governed by Tito. His death in 1980 opened the door for transformation.
Catholicism has dominated Slovenia for more than 1000 years. While part of Yugoslavia, religion was suppressed. Since becoming independent, atheism has gained a foothold, organized religion is not well-liked, and evangelical Christianity is questioned. Less than 0.1% of the population are evangelical Christians. About 40 small churches and home groups serve the 2 million people. Most of the pastors work secular jobs or receive outside funds. The home groups in rural villages are served by dedicated believers with a heart to reach their community for Christ. |
